Wild Finish as Lopers & Gorillas Battle to a 2-2 Draw

Kearney, Neb. – Three goals were scored over the final 10 minutes as Nebraska Kearney and Pittsburg State played to a 2-2 draw Friday afternoon in Kansas.

This was the MIAA opener for both and the first-ever league game for the startup Gorillas (4-0-3, 0-0-1). They announced the addition of soccer last fall and have a roster led by 16 transfers (junior college, Division I and Division II).

UNK (4-0-3,0-0-1) was poised for a 1-0 win as freshman Daniella Iaquinta (Aurora, Colo.) scored in the 66th minute after taking a pass from junior Hanna Schimmer (Council Bluffs, Ia.). Schimmer beat her defender to the end line and then sent a cross to the goal where Iaquinta punched it in for her third goal of the fall.

However, Pitt tied things up in the 80th minute and then went ahead three minutes later. Grad transfer Jadyn Newell (Fort Hays State) tallied off a tipped corner and then freshman River Riley scored after an initial shot from the left wing banged off the crossbar. The play was setup after a long goal kick.

Scoring for the fourth time in the last three games, Schimmer made sure UNK wouldn't leave Kansas without a result as she scored in the 85th minute with the assist  to Iaquinta. Schimmer got loose on the right wing with Iaquinta sending her a pass from midfield. Schimmer's four goals is the most in program history over a three-game stretch.

Junior Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) had the Lopers only shot of the first half, but the Blue & Gold managed seven over the final 45 minutes. Schimmer had a team-high three with junior Gracie Perez (Kearney) one of four Lopers with one. Finally, sophomore keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East) recorded two saves.

UNK heads to Missouri Southern on Sunday afternoon. The Lions (1-3-2) host Fort Hays Sunday night.
