Warrensburg Continues to be a Tough Test for UNK to Pass

Kearney, Neb. – Junior wing Reese Schaaf had her 11th double double of the year and redshirt senior guard Allie Clevenger hit two late three pointers to help Central Missouri get past Nebraska Kearney, 62-54, Thursday night in Warrensburg.

The Jennies (13-9, 5-6) avenge a 17-point loss to the Lopers (15-4, 8-2) earlier this year and end UNK's six-game win streak. UCM also improves to 9-1 vs. the Blue & Gold in the Multipurpose Building.

"Central Missouri is a good team, and they are figuring it out," said UNK head coach Drew Johnson on the KRVN Radio post-game show. "We've got to find a way to play better if we're going to win on the road. We got out toughed and we're a team that doesn't get out toughed very often."

Schaaf and Clevenger both began their careers at Division II power Drury (Mo.) and combined for 30 points, 14 rebounds, and two assists tonight. Schaaf, a 2024 All-American, came in averaging a double double (20 points, 10 rebounds) in league play and was close to that with 18 & 12. She was 6 of 6 at the line, 6 of 9 from the field and grabbed nine defensive boards. UNK entered with a plus nine rebounding margin but the taller Jens reached that figure tonight, 46-37.

"We didn't fight and battle the way we needed to. It's not going to work that way; we didn't have one body on the floor for the entire first half. They got every 50/50 ball," said Johnson. "You go into the locker room and talk it out. We were better in the third, held them to nine points, but then they have 21 in the fourth."

Clevenger was shooting just 29% from behind the arc in league play but hit a left wing three with 5:12 left to break a 47-47 tie. She then sunk her fourth trey of the game with 56 seconds left to push the UCM lead to six, 55-49. All four of her buckets were from downtown and she was one of three starters to score in double figures.

UNK almost overcame a 5 of 11 effort from the line and a 5 of 20 night from distance. UCM scored the first 13 points of the second quarter, but the Lopers whittled the deficit to four, 34-29, early in the second half. However, the Jens spurted again and were up 12 before UNK closed the third strong. A layup by redshirt junior guard Jillian Aschoff (Lincoln Pius) made it just a four-point deficit, 41-37.

The momentum continued into the fourth as UNK tied things at 43, 45 and 47. But the Lopers next five possessions resulted in four missed shots and a turnover. A bucket by senior Samantha Moore (Mullen) made it a one possession game but then Clevenger hit her final three. UNK didn't get closer than four points the rest of the way with UCM finishing 11 of 14 at the line.

"We batted in the third, turned them over, got some tips and stops. But we worked so hard and gave some much effort to come back and tie it that we gassed in the fourth," said Johnson. "When they were up double digits, they were able to rest their starters for a few minutes, so they were fresher down the stretch. "

Also for UCM, sophomore guard Rylee Vierthaler had a season-high eight points with 6-3 freshman Taylor Weishaar at 14 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and two assists.

"Schaaf is a great player. She had 18 points on nine shots, and she can't do that if we're going to win," said Johnson. "We pulled off Clevenger and did uncharacteristic defensive things like that all night."

Aschoff (15 points, eight rebounds, five rebounds and two steals) paced the Loper attack with Kansas gradate post Kia Wilson (11) and Moore (10) also reaching double figures. Wilson had 10 second half points with Moore hitting two threes and grabbing seven boards.

UNK heads to Washburn on Saturday. The Ichabods (11-10, 5-6) were blasted tonight by nationally-ranked Fort Hays State, 85-47. This is the MIAA "Game of the Week" and aired live on 38 the Spot in the Kansas City area.
