#5 Lopers Get Off the Schneid, Sweeps UAFS

Kearney, Neb. – The fifth-ranked Nebraska Kearney volleyball team hit .354 and dug up 44 balls to sweep Arkansas-Ft. Smith (-13, -21, -19) Thursday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK (19-2, 6-2) stops a rare two-match losing streak while the young Lions fall to 13-7 (3-4).

The Lopers bounced back from road setbacks last weekend to Emporia State and Washburn by getting 13 kills from outside Carly Purdy (North Platte) and 10 kills apiece from middles Abby Rose (Lindsborg, Kan.) and Mia Berg (Eureka, Mo.) Defensively, libero Ellie Spang (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) and outside/DS Bryn McNair (Imperial) both had 13 digs.

"First of all, I was just hoping we would compete. I still thought we were kind of tight because (the two losses) that rattles you. Getting rocked like we did both nights … some of it was them playing well but we didn't handle it well either," said UNK head coach Rick Squiers. "We've been trying to shake that off all week in practice. So, I wasn't quite sure how we were going to handle it but we were able to come out and score which gave us some confidence."

UAFS only led a couple of times all night but hung around in both the second and third sets. They were paced by true freshmen Lydia Pitts (12 kills, .423 pct.) and Crystal Smith (seven kills, six blocks, .385 pct.) but had 16 fewer digs than UNK and had five service errors. Meanwhile, the Lopers had three aces, two coming from McNair.

"We got offense from every position, serve received well and could nit pick a few other things but will just appreciate a win," said Squiers. "We've been trying to ramp up the service pressure a little bit. Some of the (six service errors) you'll live with, but a couple were untimely. We're going to have to keep serving tough in order to win down the stretch."

UNK hosts No. 4 Central Oklahoma on Saturday at 1 p.m. The 'Chos (18-2, 4-2) are at Fort Hays State tomorrow night.
