#4 Lopers Use Balance, Plays Down the Stretch to Sweep Pitt

Kearney, Neb. – The fourth-ranked Nebraska Kearney volleyball team used a balanced attack and 11 team blocks to sweep Pittsburg State (-22, -22, -23) Friday night in Kansas.

This was the only meeting between the two this fall with UNK (22-2, 9-2) avenging a four-set loss to the Gorillas (10-12, 3-8) two years ago in Kansas.

The Lopers had four players between seven and 11 kills and three between three and five blocks. UNK had to work hard in each set to get past the Gorillas who got a combined 21 kills and 13 blocks from seniors Anna Dean and Don'Yah Cosie.

The Blue & Gold trailed 21-20 and 22-21 in set one but moved ahead 1-0 on the scoreboard after a block from setter Peyton Neff (North Platte) and outside Emilee Lane (Hays, Kan.), back-to-back kills from Lane and position mate Carly Purdy (North Platte), a Lane ace and a Neff kill.

Pitt fell behind 16-11 and 22-16 in set two but got an ace from senior libero Jose McCroskey (match-high 23 digs) to make it just a three-point deficit, 23-20. After a kill by senior middle Abby Rose (Lindsborg, Kan.), Dean had a kill and assisted on a block to help the Gorillas get closer. However, a Lane kill closed things out. In the third set, UNK once again led most of the way before another Pitt charge. They scored two straight to trail 22-21 before the teams went back-and-forth. Finally, a Rose kill ended the match.

Rose (.450 pct.) and Kansas sophomore right side Brynn Stowell each had 11 kills with Lane and Purdy at eight apiece and Missouri junior middle Mia Berg (.417 pct.) providing seven. Next, Rose had five blocks, Lane and Berg both added four with Indiana junior libero Ellie Spang at a team-high 21 digs. Finally, Missouri senior DS Aleena Peterson had 15 digs and with Neff at 39 assists, 14 digs, two kills, two blocks and an ace.

UNK is at Newman on Saturday afternoon in Wichita. The Jets (2-20, 0-11) lost to Fort Hays State tonight in four sets.
