Golden Bears Win Shootout in Hays, 98-92

Kearney, Neb. – The Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears had five score in double figures and hit 24 free throws to out score Nebraska Kearney, 98-92, Saturday evening in Hays, Kan.

The game is part of the annual MIAA/NSIC Crossover Tournament. This was CU's first game of the year while UNK falls to 1-3.

In Marshall, Minn., last November, the Golden Bears posted a 95-93 (OT) win over the Lopers. They went on to have a 22-9 record, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and were picked fourth in the preseason NSIC poll.

To counter the balanced Bears, redshirt senior guard Ja'Bryant Hill (Duncanville, Texas) tallied a UNK career-high 32 points with redshirt junior forward Anthony Swift (Las Vegas) at 27. The pair was a combined 23 of 41 from the field (5 of 7 threes; 8 of 9 at the line) with Swift having eight boards and fouling out in 29. Hill logged 38 minutes and added four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

UNK trailed much of the first half but quickly grabbed the lead right after the break. A layup from senior forward Kendrick Gilbert (St. Louis) made it 52-51 at the 16:43 mark and the Lopers led for the next eight minutes. However, CU erased a 73-65 deficit with a big 19-4 run encompassing just a four-minute stretch. That made it 84-77 and UNK didn't get closer than four points the rest of the night. The spurt featured three triples and two tip-in buckets. UNK was plus seven on the glass but CU still managed 13 second chance points.

To counter Hill and Swift, the Bears were paced by sophomore guard Owen Carlson (22 points; 5 of 6 threes), junior guard Ben Kopetzki (21 points; 9 of 10 FT's) with senior forward Sam West and junior forward Chet Kloss combining for 27 points and 16 boards.

Both teams shot 47% from the field with the Bears making four more threes and making more freebies (24) than the Lopers attempted (13). Finally, Texas junior post Taylor Harrell and Gilbert had 10 points apiece for the Lopers.

UNK battles Southwest Minnesota State Sunday at 4 p.m. The Mustangs lost today to Fort Hays, 65-56.
