Big Second Half Helps Wolves Win, 65-60

Kearney, Neb. – The Northern State Wolves were plus 22 on the glass and used a big second half to down Nebraska Kearney, 65-60, Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.

The game is part of the Younes Hospitality MIAA/NSIC Crossover Tournament. On Friday, UNK (3-2) beat Minnesota-Crookston while NSU (1-1) fell to seventh-ranked Pittsburg State in overtime. The Gorillas beat the Golden Eagles in the early game, 82-78, today.

Last year in Aberdeen UNK won on the Wolves home court, 69-65. Today the Lopers got out to a 10-point first half lead but 7-0 run right before half got Northern going. It was tied at 36 three minutes into the third quarter when the Wolves went on another 7-0 run. Graduate forward Megan Counts started the spurt with a triple and NSU trailed only once more.

"We got to find a way to finish it right now. Our third quarters haven't been very good, and we were up 10 in the second quarter. We've got to find a way to close out the half a touch better," said UNK head coach Drew Johnson. "We're playing a lot of different people right now, trying to figure out rotations and roles."

The Lopers briefly led 50-49 at the start of the final period but the Wolves zoomed ahead again, this time using an 11-1 run. Redshirt freshman Lily Klein had seven of the points with UNK scoring just one point in a nearly five-minute span.

Northern's 52 caroms included 19 on the offensive end which led to 14 second chance points. They overcame an 8 of 24 effort at the line by holding UNK to 33% shooting in the second quarter and 23% in the fourth. Finally, four starters scored between 10-16 points.

"They out toughed us in that one and it's been a long time since I've seen us give up 19 offensive rebounds," said Johnson. "We've got to find a way and as a coaching staff, we've got to do a better job of preparing them."

Diller freshman Myleigh Weers paced the Lopers again, going for 22 points and eight fouls drawn. Next, Lincoln senior point guard Jillian Aschoff provided 15 points, five boards and four times with Scottsbluff sophomore reserve forward Paige Horne at 10 points in 18 minutes. Finally, UNK made 14 of its 20 free throw attempts.

UNK heads to South Dakota next week to face Sioux Falls and Augustana.
