Lopers & Tigers Battle to a 2-2 Draw in 2025 Finale

Kearney, Neb. – Graduate Keila Gillispie and senior Mia Lang scored first half goals to help Nebraska Kearney tie rival Fort Hays State, 2-2, Wednesday night in Kansas.

This was the regular season finale for both teams. UNK ends up at 3-9-5 (1-6-5) while the Tigers finish at 3-11-3 (1-8-3). Tallying eight points, the Lopers finish 10th in the league standings with Hays 11th (six points).

Lang (Papillion) scored just 1:40 into the contest with this being her first career goal. Senior Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) and junior Jordan Renard (Lincoln) sent the ball back-and-forth with Barnes chasing down a pass near the end line. She then sent a cross in front of the goal that found Lang. Next, Gillispie (Newton, Kan.) got into the scoring column for the first time as a Loper in the 19th minute. The Kansas State transfer headed in a corner from senior Reagan Downes (Olathe, Kan) to give the Lopers their second 2-0 lead in the last week.

However, the Tigers countered right before halftime on goals from sophomore Isabelle Mull (first of the year) and senior Sydney Cotter (seventh of the year). Mull scored in the 29th minute with Cotter's tying goal happening in the 43rd minute.

UNK ended with more shots on goal, 5-4, with Hays having an advantage overall, 12-5. They also took five more corners, 9-4. Lang tried to send the Blue & Gold to its first-ever win at FHSU Soccer Stadium but a free kick at 89:55 was stopped by freshman keeper Hadley Ostrander. In 11 previous games at Hays, UNK had a 1-1 draw in 2016.

Finally, Lang had a team-best two shots, junior keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln) had two saves with six healthy seniors playing their final game (Barnes, Downes, Gillispie, Lang, Corynne Olsen, and Morgan Scanlon). All-region forward Hanna Schimmer (Council Bluffs, Ia.) and Gracie Perez (Kearney) didn't take to the pitch due to injury.

The eight-team MIAA Tournament begins Sunday at four campus sites.
