This was the season opener for both the Rams and Lopers. The game is part of the three-day Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Tip Off Classic at the Trailhead. From the Lone Star Conference, Angelo went 17-12 last season but had to replace its top 11 scorers. The new-look roster included four Division I and four junior college transfers, two D2 transfers, two freshmen and a D3 transfer. Six-three freshman guard Davon Scott paced the way early as he went for 16 first half points thanks to 6 of 8 (4 of 4 threes) shooting. Angelo jumped out to a 7-0 lead and pushed that advantage to 13 points, but UNK whittled the deficit to 38-32 by the break. Senior guard Ja'Bryant Hill (Duncanville, Texas) had 10 points over the first 20 minutes with junior wing Kendrick Gilbert (St. Louis) at eight points and three rebounds. Three minutes into the second half, redshirt junior forward Anthony Swift (Las Vegas) dropped to the floor after receiving a forearm shiver to the back of the head. Swift missed last season due to a leg injury and is expected to be one of the Lopers top posts this year. Six-seven senior transfer Ja'Queze Kirby was summarily ejected from the contest with Swift not returning to the court. Hill made the technical free throws to tie the game at 40 and then UNK moved ahead 52-50 on a Gilbert bucket six minutes later. However, it was all ASU from there as they eventually built a 69-55 advantage. The big seven-minute run featured nine Rams free throws and scoring from six different players. During this stretch, UNK was 0 of 9 from the field with two turnovers. Angelo out shot UNK by a 41-33% margin, was plus 12 on the glass, and got 28 bench points. Both squads made six threes with the Lopers 20 of 23 at the line and the Rams just 15 of 24. Hill (19) and Gilbert (18) combined for 37 points on 10 of 22 shooting and a 14 of 17 effort at the line. Hill played a team-best 35 minutes, sunk two triples and had four assists with Gilbert drawing seven fouls and having five boards. Next, junior post Taylor Harrell (Huntsville, Texas) had seven rebounds and three dimes, Swift had eight points and four boards over 18 minutes, and senior newcomer Wade Williams (Huntsville, Texas) had eight points and five rebounds before fouling out late. Angleo had four score in double figures including Scott (18) and Tulsa transfer Jesaiah McWright (12) with Little (11 points, eight rebounds) close to a double double. Finally, 6-7, 230-pound reserve post Jhordan Ryan had seven rebounds (four offense) and three blocks in only 15 minutes. UNK plays No. 10 Colorado School of Mines Saturday at 10 a.m. The Orediggers battled MIAA member Central Missouri later Friday.
