Pueblo Holds Off UNK Rally, 84-80

Kearney, Neb. – Senior guards Seneya Martinez and Genesis Sweetwine combined for 47 points and Colorado State-Pueblo sunk 22 free throws to down Nebraska Kearney, 84-80, Friday night in Billings, Mont.

This was the season opener for both squads with the game part of the three-day Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Tip Off Classic at the Trailhead.

UNK was plus 20 on the glass and out shot CSUP for much of the night but couldn't overcome 22 turnovers and a disparity at the line. The T-Wolves led 40-33 at the break thanks to 13 of 19 freebie shooting; the Lopers missed both of their first half stripe shots. Things evened out in the second half as UNK was 13 of 18 and Pueblo 9 of 14 at the line. Team Celebration 2025-26

Previously at Northeastern (Colo.) J.C. and Division I Appalachian State, Martinez went for a game-high 25 points thanks to 11 of 19 shooting (3 of 8 threes). She played for nearly 32 minutes and added two assists and two steals. Martinez is one of many newcomers as Pueblo had to replace its top six scorers off a 18-11 (13-7 RMAC) squad. Sweetwine is the top veteran and tallied 22 points on 7 of 11 shooting (3 of 5 threes). She also was 5 of 6 at the line and had three dimes. Seven others got into the scoring column including junior guard Wynter Jones (nine points, eight rebounds, five steals).

The Lopers trailed by 11 with five minutes left in the third but came all the way back to grab an early fourth quarter lead, 58-56. Two free throws from senior point guard Jillian Aschoff (Lincoln Pius X) capped the 18-5 run. However, that would be UNK's last lead with a Martinez triple making it a 72-67 deficit with four minutes left. Eventually falling behind by eight, UNK had a chance to knot things up at 78 with just 1:32 remaining but a three by senior point guard Saniya Simmons (Olathe, Kan.) didn't fall. Aschoff grabbed the board, but the Lopers missed a two-point shot and CSUP salted away things from there.

Kansas junior forward Jordan Sears (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Serbian sophomore Tara Biocanin (13 points, 13 rebounds) had double doubles to pace the Blue & Gold. All of Sears points came after the break with Biocanin having 10 offensive caroms and going 6 of 7 from the field.  Next, Diller freshman Myleigh Weers had 11 points and six rebounds in her collegiate debut with Aschoff at 11 points, eight rebounds, five dimes and three steals. Finally, Iowa freshman post Lynnae Green scored six points in just eight minutes.

The Blue & Gold faces another former RMAC rival in Colorado School of Mines on Saturday (4:30 p.m. Central). The Orediggers lost to No. 20 Texas-Tyler, 55-50, in an earlier game on Friday.
