Lopers Run Past the Larks

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney men's basketball team shot 67 percent in the first half, sunk 12 threes and got a game-high 20 points from senior Tom Connelly to fly past Hesston (Kan.) College, 102-62, Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The Lopers improved to 5-5 while the Larks fell to 0-15. Hesston is a first-year NAIA member after being in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Reaching the Century mark for the first time since Nov. 2023, UNK got out to a 24-6 lead and never looked back. The Lopers made 26 of their first 39 shots (7 of 16 threes) and went 2 of 3 at the line to lead 61-23 at the break. The Larks, meanwhile, were just 9 of 29 over the first 20 minutes and committed 14 turnovers.

Connelly (Denver) reached his point total thanks to 7 of 8 (5 of 6 threes) shooting). He also had four rebounds and was three shy of tying his career-point total. Next, junior reserve post Taylor Harrell (Huntsville, Texas) had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and junior forward Anthony Swift (Las Vegas) went for 17 points (7 of 9 shooting) and a thunderous dunk. Finally, freshman lefty Zeek Brown (Kansas City) had eight points and redshirt freshman Chiaki Momma (Japan) had his first two collegiate buckets.

Hesston, which shot 47% from the field in the second half, was led by starters Trent Thompson (17 points, six rebounds) and Brennon Dodge (15 points).

Both Loper squads host Chadron State Tuesday night.
