Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UNK Scores 111 on "Kids Day"; Eagles Tuesday Night

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women's basketball team had a school-record tying 38 assists to down the Southwestern (Kan.) College Moundbuilders, 111-43, Monday morning at the Health & Sports Center.

The Lopers improve to 5-6 while SC, led by former UNK assistant coach Josh Burt, remains at 4-7. Per NAIA, this was an exhibition game for "The Jinx."

Well over 500 elementary students were in attendance and were boisterous throughout.  They reached full throttle when freshman Myleigh Weers (Diller) made a third-quarter jumper to push the score to 67-31. Lynnae Green

"It was so awesome. This is one of my favorite things we've ever done. If you combine an earlier game (Nov. 14 vs. Minnesota-Crookston), we had over 1,000 kids in our gym," said UNK head coach Drew Johnson. "The atmosphere is something you cannot replicate. We'll continue to do this once a year and continue to bring schools in."

This marks the 30th time UNK has reached the "Century Mark" and the 10th time it has tallied 111. The 38 dimes were also achieved back in 2019 (vs. Manhattan Christian, Kan.) and 2000 (vs. College of Saint Mary). Finally, this is the seventh time a Loper team has sunk 15 threes in a game (15/35).

"This kind of game lets a lot of people play and hopefully see the ball go in. When they have success, that'll help us when we need them to play in a game that's tight," said Johnson.

All 11 healthy Lopers played for at least 12 minutes with 12 scoring. Six reached double figures led by Polish senior Malgorzata Byczkowska (25), Weers (16) and Serbian sophomore reserve post Tara Biocanin (13). Next, Lincoln senior point guard Jillian Aschoff tied her career in assists (11) and had six boards and three thefts in 19 minutes. She needs just 21 more assists to set a new Loper career record (390, Alexa Hogberg, '17). Finally, five others were between three and seven assists.

"We've been just okay so far this year guarding the scouting report. The big message today was 'Are we going to be willing to guard the scouting report?' I thought we were okay in that area in the first half but better in the second," said Johnson. "This game was all about bringing Josh back. Someone that spent nine years coaching with us at the college level and 11 years total. Nice to see him back in the gym and help support him in the transition of becoming a head coach."
Martha De La Rosa had 12 points to pace the 'Builders.

UNK hosts Chadron State (0-7) Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the Eagle/Loper men's game.
