Lopers Throw Up 18 Runs to Sweep the Wolves

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney softball team scored 18 runs to sweep a double header from Northern State, 9-5 and 9-0 (5 innings), Saturday afternoon in Pittsburg, Kan.

The games are part of the MIAA/NSIC Crossover with the Lopers (12-13) staying in Pitt and facing Minnesota State-Moorhead (7-16) in double dip Sunday. The games have been moved up to a 10 a.m. start.

The Wolves (6-13) led 2-0 after 3.5 innings in game one but UNK erupted for a seven spot in its half of the fourth. The best inning of the year featured eight hits including a two-run triple by Wahoo junior shortstop Mary Chvatal (2 for 4, two runs) and two-run single by Canadian senior right fielder Madisyn Simms.

UNK added two more runs in the sixth with Iowa redshirt junior Madeline Janssen picking up her third by working around 12 hits. In throwing 81 pitches, she didn't walk a batter, while fanning four and seeing the Wolves strand six. Finally, the Lopers had its entire starting lineup register a hit with Chvatal one of five to have two.

California sophomore Daniella Morillas (2-3) threw a five-inning complete game shut out in the night cap. She needed just 44 pitches while striking out one, walking none and giving up only three singles. At the plate, Colorado senior second baseman Rylyn Nelson (four RBI's) and Iowa freshman DP Katie Janssen both went yard. The two-run shot in the third is Janssen's first collegiate dinger with Nelson up to a team-best four.

UNK has a quick turnaround as they host Mary in a double header on Monday. Those games now begin at noon.
