UNK Goes 1-1 on Day Two in Branson; Homestand Starts Next Weekend

Kearney, Neb. – Freshmen Jerzie Schindler and Kalli Ulven combined on a six-hitter and sophomore third baseman Alyssa Fortik and a three-run triple to help Nebraska Kearney down Truman State (Mo.), 3-1, Saturday afternoon in Branson, Mo.

The game was part of the "Showtime Classic" with the Lopers (8-8) falling to Missouri S&T, 4-1, in the first contest on Saturday. This was the second straight weekend UNK was in Branson and finished up 4-4 at the site.

Schindler (3-1) allowed one earned run over the first five innings on a walk and four hits. She fanned three and blanked the Bulldogs (12-11) until the bottom of the sixth. Ulven (Blair) picked up the save by limiting the damage and getting the final six outs without giving up a run.

Fortik (Raymond) delivered the game's key hit, a two-out triple to right in the top of the second. Northern Iowa transfer Kaylyn Jones (6-1) went the distance for TSU and gave up only one other hit – an infield single -- but also walked four. Most of the damage came in the second and after the first two Lopers went in order.

Also for UNK, Colorado senior center fielder Eden McNally went 1 for 3 with a run scored and Arizona junior Alivia De La Cruz scored once and walked twice.

The Miners (3-14) scored four runs over the first three innings and two pitchers combined on a four-hitter to take the early game.

S&T's first four batters in the lineup went a combined 5 for 13 with junior designated player Kiera Jones having a key two-run double in the third. For UNK, Colorado senior second baseman Rylyn Nelson was 2 for 3 with Lincoln senior first baseman Leagh Jurgens finishing 1 for 3 with an RBI. Finally, Iowa junior Madeline Janssen struck out four in three scoreless innings of relief work.

The Lopers begin a six-game home stand next weekend when Northwest Missouri (9-7) and Central Missouri (6-6) come to town.
