Lopers Compete in Large Wichita State Meet; Home Next Saturday

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney track and field team had five all-time Top 10 efforts at the annual KT Woodman Classic this weekend in Wichita.

The large meet, featuring high school and college athletes, began Thursday and ended Saturday night at Wichita State's Cessna Stadium.

UNK had 26 top 10 finishes with David City senior Payton Davis winning the 1,500 (3:50.89) with York junior Brynn Hirschfeld (steeplechase/11:08.20) and Kearney junior Lily Novacek (hammer/191-2) both runners up.  

On the women's side, Gothenburg freshman Madison Smith was third in the discus with the third best throw (164-9) in school history. It also places her fourth in Division II now. Next, Blair freshman Reece Ewoldt had the program's third best time in the 5,000 (17:24.74) with McCool Junction freshman Kassidy Stuckey now fourth in the 1,500 (4:32.67). Both finished in the top six with UNK having seven of the top 23 in the 5,000.

Lexington freshman Will Kulhanek ran a 21.18 to finish 12th in the 200-meter dash. The time moves him into second place all-time and just behind Allen Burrell (21.03). In the field, Gretna junior Clayton Kelly went 48-7.50 to place fourth in the triple jump. The career-best effort ties him for ninth on the all-time list. Next, Kansas junior Kenyon Forest was seventh in the javelin (207-2), Hastings sophomore Nolan Studley cleared 6-8.25 to be in fifth in the high jump, Omaha junior Nick Abdalla finished third in the steeple (9:12.23) and Omaha sophomore Reed Emsick placed fifth in the 800 (1:51.48). Finally, UNK had five of the top 19 finishers in the steeple and four in the top 23 in the 800.

The Lopers return home next Saturday at Kearney High School.
