4/29/2025 10:14:00 AM

Kearney, Neb. – Nebraska Kearney has placed three on the 2025 All-MIAA/GAC men's tennis team.

The league's 11 head coaches, North (MIAA) and South (Great American Conf.) Divisions, nominate and calculate the makeup of the squad.

New this year, the All-MIAA team is based on individual victories against conference opponents only. For singles, players received +6 points for each win at No. 1, +5 points for each win at No. 2, etc. Same scoring in doubles and awarded +3 points for each win at No. 1, +2 for each win at No. 2 and +1 for each win at No. 3. Note matches against the opposite division count in the totals but not all schools' have the same amount of duals against said competition. For example, UNK faced three South teams this year in Harding, Arkansas-Ft. Smith and Ouachita Baptist.

The singles player with the most points is awarded "Player of the Year" title and the freshman nominee with the most points was awarded the "Freshman of the Year" honor. Finally, head coaches were responsible for calculating their nominees' wins and points.

Sophomores Jip Mens (Netherlands) makes the first-team at singles with true freshmen Ivan Melnik (Germany) and Adrian Constantin (Romania) receiving honorable mention in doubles.

Mens has had a breakout year, currently 18-4 in duals. Ranked nationally since mid-March, he enters the MIAA Tournament 11-2 at No. 2 and 4-2 at No. 1. Mens is riding a four-match win streak and owns five wins over nationally-ranked foes.

UNK has used 16 different doubles pairs during the dual season with Melnik and Constantin going 5-3 at No. 1. They were 2-2 in league play, recorded a win against national power Flagler (Fla.) and recently entered the national rankings. Overall, Melnik is 10-8 in doubles with Constantin, a mid-year newcomer, 14-9.

The Lopers (11-13) face the Harding Bison Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Springfield, Mo., in the first-round of the MIAA/GAC Tournament. A win and UNK plays Thursday at 2 p.m. against Washburn.
