Early Goal Helps Lopers Take Home Opener

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Anna Thorhallsdottir scored in the 19th minute and freshman Madelyn Schaffert earned her first win in goal as Nebraska Kearney downed Black Hills State, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

This was UNK's home opener with Northwestern Oklahoma State getting past Sioux Falls, 1-0, to start the day.

The short-handed Lopers (1-2-0) were also minus starting keeper Susie Bovaird today due to a red card she picked up last Sunday Minnesota. That brought in Schaffert who starred at Gretna East H.S. and played most of the contest vs. Minnesota State-Moorhead.

A second-year Loper who began her career at Division I Nicholls (La.) State, Thorhalldottir (Iceland) notched her first collegiate goal at 19:39. The Lopers forced a turnover deep in BHSU territory and Thorhallsdottir eventually found All-Region performer Hanna Schimmer (Council Bluffs, Ia.) on the left wing. Drawing the attention of three Yellow Jacket defenders, Schimmer slipped in attempting a left foot shot. However, the ball was poked right to Thorhallsdottir who used her left foot for the game's only goal.

UNK finished the hot afternoon with more shots and corners than BHSU with Schaffert recording a save. Finally, both senior Mia Lang (Papillion-La Vista South) and sophomore Billie Forrest (Taylorsville, Utah) had shots on goal.

On Sunday, BHSU faces NWOSU at 10 a.m. with UNK and USF following at one.
