Lopers Win South Dakota Tourney

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women's golf team shot a 36-hole total of 635 to win the Homestake Invitational Tuesday in Spearfish, S.D.

The eight-team event was hosted by Black Hills State at the par 72 Spearfish Canyon G.C. (5,803 yards). The average score was 87.4.

Besides the host Yellowjackets, South Dakota Mines and Montana State-Billings (two squads) were the other D2 schools in attendance with NAIA Dickinson (N.D.) State and two junior colleges rounding out the field. UNK had efforts of 325 and 310 to edge MSU-B (641) for first with Billings "B" squad third (659).

Arizona senior Emmie Rhude came in third (156; 80-76) with Kansas junior Liz Lyons one spot back (157; 84-73). Orraya Jan Tipasathien of Billings was the medalist thanks to a 147 and wins the tourney for a second straight fall. Rhude had three birdies and five straight pars in round two with Lyons carding an Eagle on the par 5 10th hole (449 yards) on Tuesday. She also had three birdies and 11 pars in round two.

Next, Minnesota sophomore Calie Dockter tied for seventh (162; 82-80), Texas junior Sofia Wildeman tied for 11th (164;81-83) and Kansas senior Beth Grant tied for 18th (168; 85-83). Grant was one of three Lopers to be an individual in the tourney, and she recorded three birdies overall with Berquist and Wildeman at one each. Finally, Colombian senior Sofia Laserna Murra came in 30th (175; 92-83) and Missouri sophomore Mia Farrar placed 37th (180; 90-90).

UNK heads to Wichita for the Newman Invite early next week.
