Lopers and Gorillas Fight to a 1-1 Draw on MIAA Opening Night

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Hanna Schimmer scored in the 21st minute and junior keeper Susie Bovaird made four saves as Nebraska Kearney and Pittsburg State battled to a 1-1 draw Friday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

This was the MIAA opener for both teams. UNK (2-3-1) faces Missouri Southern Sunday afternoon with Pitt (5-1-1) traveling to Fort Hays State.

At the midpoint of the first half, the Gorillas lined up for a corner kick with the ball landing in the box but headed out. UNK quickly countered with sophomore Billie Forrest (Taylorville, Utah) gaining control and racing towards midfield. She found Schimmer behind the Pitt defense on the right wing just past midfield and the All-Region scorer did the rest. Schimmer kept her seven-yard advantage and beat keeper Jocelyn Kramar for her 11th goal as a Loper.

"Good little slip front post and Hanna being Hanna," said UNK head coach Rob Breton.

Pitt, who had more shots and corners overall, tied things up seven minutes later when Annie Payne saw one shot attempt blocked by a defender but tried again and scored from almost 20 yards out. A reserve, Payne was one of four Gorillas to have at least two shots.

"It was tough. They controlled the game really well and used a frantic press on us. That forced us to play a much more sharp and intentional game," said Breton. "That's something not many teams have done to us so far. It demanded the girls to be better in moments, and it showed where we need to focus our attention on how we handle pressure."

Missing last Sunday's 3-0 win at Western Colorado, Schimmer came off the bench and had a team-best three shots over 65 minutes. Down the stretch, three yellow cards issued with 15 fouls called on the night.

"We put up a fight the whole time and they really had only two shots that challenged (Bovaird). Their goal was a brilliant shot and not much you can do there," said Breton. "That's one of the harder teams we'll see all season, and we made them play through us rather than over us."

MSSU (2-3-2) and FHSU fought to a scoreless draw tonight in Kansas.
