Lopers Wrap Up Fall Season

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams wrapped up their fall schedule this past weekend by taking part in the ITA Central Regional (men) and the Creighton/UNO Invitational (women).

Both tournaments were held Friday and Saturday with the "A" flight winners in singles in doubles at the ITA's in Topeka advancing to the ITA Cup in October.

In Omaha, senior Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius) and freshman Patricija Cechanaviciute (Lithuania) went 2-1 in doubles with junior Julia Wartecka (Poland) picking up two singles wins. Plachy and Cechanaviciute beat pairs from Division I South Dakota and Oral Roberts (Okla.) with Wartecka besting two players from Division III Gustavos Adolphus (Minn.) in straight sets.

On the men's side, junior Andy Brisdon (U.K.) reached the "A" singles quarterfinals with junior Tom van den Dungen (Netherlands) bouncing back to reach the "A" consolation semis. Brisdon had to go overtime to win his second match, winning 14-12 in set three, with van den Dungen falling in three sets in the semis.   

In the "B" flight, senior Alex Jaulin (Australia) was the runner up, advancing to the semis after an 11-9 third set win. His other three victories came in straight sets. Finally, Brisdon and sophomore Ivan Melnik (Germany) went 2-1 and reached the A" doubles quarters. They won their second match by a 9-8 (7-4) score.

The Lopers are now off until February when the indoor season begins at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
