Lopers Fight but Top-Ranked 'Bods Still Unbeaten

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore forward Dillon Claussen scored 27 points, and the top-ranked Washburn Ichabods hit 10 threes to beat Nebraska Kearney, 89-67, Saturday night at Buckle Court.

WU (22-0, 12-0) remains unbeaten and takes the season series from UNK (10-13, 3-9).

The Lopers got a career-high 21 points from Mullen redshirt sophomore wing Clayton Moore and 19 points from Dallas senior guard Ja'Bryant Hill to more than hang around in each half. Against a squad with a 26-point margin of victory, UNK trailed by just a 29-25 score with five minutes left in the half. However, WU went into the locker room after a 15-4 run that included nine points from senior reserve guard Sam Ungashick.

That momentum carried into the second half as the 'Bods lead ballooned to 20 points. However, thanks to Moore's 19 second half points, the deficit was trimmed to 60-52 with nine to play. UNK was down nine by the 7:05 mark before the 'Bods finished strong again. They scored 25 of the final 37 points, hitting two threes along the way.

"Proud of the effort and proud of them for making that little run in the second half. We turned it over 19 times but that's what they do; they trap in the post, they trap all on balls, and we did a pretty good job of trying to stay out of those spots," said UNK head coach Marty Levinson on the KRVIN radio-post game show. "We still had some turnover spurts but I'm proud of the rebounding because they've been beating people up pretty good on the glass."

A Creighton Prep graduate, Claussen had 18 second half points and finished 11 of 16 from the field with senior transfer guard Bryson Smith at 19 points thanks to 8 of 9 free throw shooting. Next, junior shooter Jack Bachelor hit three triples to score 17 with Wahoo sophomore reserve Marcus Glock hitting two threes to score six.

Moore was 6 of 9 from the field (1 of 2 threes) and 8 of 10 at the line to eclipse the 17 points he had at Regis in December. He also had seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Next, Hill hit seven shots (three triples) with Denver senior shooter Tom Connelly going 3 of 6 from downtown. Finally, WU was only plus three on the glass, shot just four percentage points higher but posted a plus nine turnover margin and made 13 more freebies.

"We had a rough one on Thursday (loss to Central Missouri) but at 8 a.m. on Friday Clay was in here putting in the work. That's what he does; he approaches basketball like you would expect from a farmer or rancher. He's going to spin his wheels and I'm so happy for him," said Levinson.

UNK heads to Arkansas-Ft. Smith (16-4, 7-4) Thursday night.
