UNK Begins Dual Season in Sioux Falls, Goes a Combined 2-1

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams began their dual season this weekend in Sioux Falls, the women sweeping USF and falling to Augustana, 4-1, with the men beating the Vikings, 5-2.

On Friday, the Loper women swept the Cougars with ease as they won doubles by a combined score of 18-7 and swept five of the six singles matches.

Mid-year transfer and Bolivian freshman Valentina Zamora made a strong debut at six singles (-0, -0) with fellow first-year players Hannah Klaiber (-2, -0) and Patricija Cechanaviciute (-3, -0) rolling at one and five, respectively. Finally, sophomore Jasmine Ben Aba won in straight sets at five (-4, -3) with Polish junior Julia Wartecka rallying from a 7-5 hole in the third set to win at three (-2, 6-7, -7).

Things were tougher on Saturday against an Augie squad that has always had the Lopers number in duals. While Klaiber and Wartecka won 7-6 (-3) at two doubles, the Vikings took the other two to lead 1-0. They then swept three, five and six singles to win with Cechanaviciute tallying UNK's point at one (-1, -4).

A more seasoned Loper men's squad avenged a 4-3 loss to the Vikings last year by taking the doubles point and winning two three set singles matches.

After winning at one and two doubles, UNK was up 3-0 after straight set wins from German sophomore Ivan Melnik at one (-2, -0) and Polish junior Jakub Strzelecki at six (-1, -2). Augie scored the next two points, winning one three set match, before the Lopers closed things out. Nationally-ranked Andy Brisdon (U.K.) dropped the first set by a point and then was down 5-4 in the second before rallying for a 7-6 (-5) win. He then scored all six points in the third with senior Alex Jaulin (Australia) rallying as well at five (4-6, -5, -3).

The men host McPherson (Kan.) and Morningside (Ia.) next weekend at the Grundy while the women also playing the MU Mustangs as well as Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.).
