Lopers Climb the Mountain but the 'Bods Finish Strong

Kearney, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods used a balanced attack and closed on a 17-6 run to down Nebraska Kearney, 76-65, Saturday at the Health & Sports Center.

WU (15-6, 8-4) sweeps the season series from UNK (11-12, 4-8) and has now won four straight in the series.

Trailing for almost the entire way but not by more than even points, the Lopers hung around thanks to 22 points from freshman guard Myleigh Weers (Diller) and a 12-point second quarter from junior forward Jordan Sears (McPherson, Kan.). The 'Bods, having eight between six and 13 points, shot 50 percent in each quarter and were plus five on the glass.

A 7-2 UNK run to start the fourth quarter tied things at 59. Weers and junior Brinly Christensen (Lincoln Pius) hit threes during this stretch with this being the first tie since late in the first half. However, WU went 5 of 7 from the field and 7 of 9 at the line over the final seven minutes to pull away. UNK couldn't keep pace as they were just 4 of 15 from the field in the fourth while committing four turnovers.

"At some point we were going to have to hold them; they shot 50 percent or better in every quarter. At some point you must be able to get stops and that's on me. I haven't done a good enough job coaching or helping them understand how to do that," said UNK head coach Drew Johnson. "Haven't done a good enough job working on team defense and how to finish possessions. We've got to go back to the drawing board, watch film and find ways to help them to get to that position."

Junior wing Madelyn Amekporfor (13) and junior reserve post Britany Kogbara (12) led in scoring with junior reserve guard Kellyn Hunter providing six points, five boards, and five fouls drawn. She also had the team's highest +/- at 14.

"We played really hard and really proud of the fight and toughness that we showed. Now, for their sake, I want their fight and toughness to result in a W," said Johnson.

The Lopers were out shot by 15 percentage points, but Weers was 7 of 17 (5 of 10 threes) from the field to record her 10th 20-point performance. She did so in 29 minutes off the bench with Sears ending up at 14 points and seven fouls drawn in 25 minutes of work. Finally, junior post Tara Biocanin (Serbia) and senior point guard Saniya Simmons (Olathe, Kan.) had 10 points apiece.

"I thought Tara played well, was physical and fought hard. Myleigh was electric and we brought her off the bench to change the matchups a little bit. To see if we could find a way to get int o a different mode," said Johnson.

UNK heads to Arkansas-Ft. Smith (3-17, 2-9) on Thursday night.
