Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men Upset No. 18 Mustangs, Women Almost Beat No. 8

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams were on the opposite ends of 4-3 results against Midwestern (Texas) State, the men upsetting the 18th-ranked Mustangs and the women falling to the nation's eighth-ranked squad Friday at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

The men (5-2) earned one of its biggest wins since the program resumed in 2023 as they jetted out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back.

In doubles, sophomore Ivan Melnik (Germany) and junior Andy Brisdon (U.K.) upset the nation's 16th-ranked pair of Earle/Setti at two (-3) with the team point coming down to number three. There, junior Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) and freshman Cesare Carpano (Italy) rallied from deficits of 4-1 and 6-5 to tie things up. They then control the tie break, 7-3, to win the match.

Freshman Ilan Fuentes (France) and the 35th-ranked Brison won in straight sets at five and two, respectively, with Strzelecki recording the clinch at six (-3, -4). He tallied the final three points in set two.

Earlier in the day, the MSU women (2-0) took the doubles point, not allowing more than a point in any match, then won in straight sets and three and five singles to build a 3-0 lead.

Freshman Hannah Klaiber (Germany) got UNK on the board with a win at six (-5, -2) with both senior Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius) and junior Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) winning in three sets to close out the dual. Plachy got out to a 7-3 lead and hung on for a 10-8 with Gamboa, coming off the injured list, beating 42nd-ranked Emilia Gyorgy by a similar score. She trailed 5-2 and 7-5 but tallied the last two points of the long battle.

UNK hosts the Rockhurst (Mo.) Hawks Sunday at 10 a.m.
