Last Second Layup Lifts Lopers to a 58-57 Win

Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt senior point guard Jillian Aschoff found true freshman Myleigh Weers for a last second layup to help Nebraska Kearney down Northeastern State, 58-57, Saturday afternoon in Tahlequah.

The Lopers (12-13, 5-9) stop four-game skid while the RiverHawks (16-6, 8-5) suffer a third straight setback. This was the only meeting between the two this year with UNK now 20-3 vs. NSU since the 2012-13 season.

It was a rock fight all afternoon as each team shot under 37% with no one leading by more than eight points. NSU sophomore post Deyanna Douglas converted a three-point play with 4.5 seconds left to make it 57-56. The 'Hawks trailed 27-26 at the break but outscored the Lopers by three in the third.

After the Douglas bucket, UNK called timeout to advance the ball. Aschoff (Lincoln Pius X) found a cutting Weers (Diller) for a reverse layup and the win. NSU called a timeout with two tenths of a second left but a deep three was well off the mark.

Aschoff was close to another double double (12 rebounds, nine points and six assists) with Weers at a team-high 15 points. She made six shots and three free freebies with Kansas junior forward Jordan Sears having seven points on 3 of 4 shooting. Finally, Scottsbluff sophomore lefty reserve post Paige Horne had five boards and five points in 13 minutes for work.

NSU, now 6-4 at home, was led by sophomore reserve guard Gabrielle Tilley (13 points) and 6-0 redshirt sophomore starting forward McKenzie Smith (18 points, four rebounds).

UNK hosts Newman and Emporia State to close out the home slate for the 2025-26 season.
