UNK Ties Green Squad for First on St. Paddy's Day

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women's golf team shot a 36-hole total of 603 to tie for first place at the annual SMSU Classic Tuesday in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

The two-day, 12-team event was held at the par 70 Wigwam Resort/Blue Course (5,631 yards) and hosted by Southwest Minnesota State. The average score over the tourney was an 82.14.

The Lopers fielded two teams with the "A" squad having rounds of 298 and 305. Illinois Wesleyan, Division III's 24th-ranked squad, had efforts of 299 and 304 to have the same total. The Blue & Gold's "B" team carded a 644 (330-314) to best one "B" and five varsity outfits.

Kansas junior Liz Lyons tied for second place thanks to a 7-over 147 (72-75). Her tourney featured three birdies and six consecutive pars in round one. IWU's Gigi Zera was the medalist thanks to a 5-over 145 (70-75) and she managed the only Eagle in the event.

Next, Minnesota sophomore Calie Dockter (T-6th/149; 75-74), Kansas junior Claire Berquist (T-11th/152; 74-78) and Arizona senior Emmie Rhude (T-17th/155; 77-78) all cracked the Top 20. Finally, the "B" team was led by Swedish freshman Pella Broms who was among the tourney leads in birdies with four. She tied for second as well (147; 76-71) and had nine consecutive pars on the back nine Tuesday afternoon.

The Lopers head to Topeka on March 23 for the annual Firekeeper Open.
