Kearney, Neb. – The seventh-ranked Nebraska Kearney volleyball team hit a school-record .586 to sweep Northwestern Oklahoma State (-9, -14, -6) Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The match is part of the annual Rosella Meier Fall Classic. Both NWOSU (6-6) and Hastings (10-2) bested William Jewell (1-9) in four sets earlier in the day.

The Lopers (9-1) recorded 52 kills over 88 swings with only two miscues (one unforced and one blocked). The effort easily bests the previous mark of .533 (38-6-60), set in a 2008 win at Colorado State-Pueblo

"Boy everything seemed to work well for us today. The first two or three points were kind of sloppy (in each set) but suddenly, we'd catch fire," said Loper head coach Rick Squiers. "We did a lot of things well; we were clicking on offense in about every position, setters did a great job of moving the ball around, we were in system enough and blocked really well."

Outside Grace Schmedding (.818 pct.; nine kills) and middle Megan Leedle (.778 pct.; seven kills) had the hottest hands with middle Sydney Davis (.667 pct.; eight kills) and right side Brynn Stowell (.444 pct.; eight kills) close behind. Meanwhile, the Rangers hit just .009 (21-20-107) and scored only 29 points overall.

"They aren't used to being blocked like that. We were able to take away a couple of their key attackers early and then they didn't have an answer for it," said Squiers. "We also kept playing and didn't look at the scoreboard and lose focus."

At the net, Davis (Dannebrog) added six blocks with libero Ellie Spang (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) at 15 digs and Schmedding (Olathe, Kan.) getting to 13 balls. Finally, setters Ellie Eckman (Lincoln) and Callie Squiers (Kearney) combined for 41 assists and nine digs.

"I still think we need to serve better. They were in system a lot and right up until the end. We kind of broke them down late in the third, but we had to defend against a three-option offense after they had a perfect pass," said Squiers. "We have to find a little higher level from the service line to beat some of the teams coming up on our schedule."

UNK battles WJC Saturday at 11 a.m. and then Hastings at 5 p.m. In between, NWOSU takes on the Broncos at 1 p.m.
