Three Second Half Goals Powers UNK to a Win at Wayne

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women's soccer team scored three second half goals to down rival Wayne State, 3-1, Friday night in Wayne.

The game was pushed back two hours to a 6 p.m. kickoff due to excessive heat. The Lopers (2-0-1) remain undefeated and beat the Wildcats (1-2-0) for the fourth time in seven meetings. This also is the third 2-0-1 start in school history (2017 and 2024). 

The 'Cats had two corners in the first half, but UNK was in control overall, having seven of the eight shots as well as a possession advantage. About eight minutes into the second half, the Lopers finally struck pay dirt as freshman Bella Spadavecchia (Greenville, S.C.) found junior Daniella Iaquinta (Aurora, Colo.) for her seventh career goal. That ties her for fifth all-time in school history.  

Eighteen minutes later, UNK added an insurance goal as junior Ka'iulani Nishigaya (Waipahu, Hawai'i) scored with the assist going to senior Sarah Levy (Basalt, Colo.). This is Nishigaya's first Loper goal after a stellar career at Taft (Calif.) College. Finally, junior Serene Hamzeh (Iowa City, Ia.) tallied her first career goal in the 82nd minute with an "own goal" accounting for WSC's score.

UNK heads to Sioux Falls (1-1-0) Sunday at 1 p.m. The Cougars last result was a 3-0 win over NAIA Dakota State on Aug. 30.
