Scott Lewis joined the Nebraska-Kearney football program in January 2017 and serves as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator. He directly coaches the Loper inside linebackers.

UNK's defense was vastly improved in 2017, ranking among the league leaders in total (367 yards per game) and rush (125 ypg) defense while holding three opponents under 14 points. The Lopers also racked up 63 TFL's (28 sacks) and forced 15 turnovers. Six of UNK's seven All-MIAA selections came on the defensive side of the ball. Fifth-year senior and safety George Brown was tabbed for a third time, sophomore end Hinwa Allieu made the third-team with fellow end Tye Spies named honorable mention for a second straight fall.  27779

The Loper "D" continued to be tough in 2018, allowing just 22 points and 328 yards per game. Earning its first shut out as an MIAA member (45-0 vs. Missouri Southern State), UNK held three others under 20 points and four under 300 yards. The Lopers were again among the league leaders in most defensive categories for a second straight fall.  Individually, junior inside backer Sal Silvio was among the national tackle leaders (108) with safety Dallas Vaughn and Spies and Allieu again earning All-MIAA honors.

Allieu signed on with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons after a 2019 season in which the Loper defense ranked second in the MIAA in rushing (125.1 ypg). UNK went 7-5 and won the Mineral Water Bowl, the program's fourth-ever postseason victory. The Lopers held three foes under 20 points including national power Northwest Missouri State (17). Kearney beat the Bearcats, 24-17, that day to help extend a win streak to three straight games. Finally, Silvio earned All-Region accolades after finishing his career with 325 stops, second most in Loper lore.

Lewis, a Pennsylvania native, came to UNK from Division II member Eastern New Mexico where he served as defensive and special teams coordinator. One of the most prolific tacklers in FCS history while playing for Saint Francis University (Pa.), Lewis had two coaching stops at ENMU (2015-16 and 2011-14) and also worked at his alma mater (2014-15).

In two seasons leading the Greyhounds defense, Lewis coached 10 All-Lone Star Conference players and saw his group force 47 turnovers and record 56 sacks. Helping ENMU recorded back-to-back winning seasons and reach two Heart of Texas Bowls, the ‘Hounds ranked 15th nationally against the rush (84.4 yards per game) in 2016. Finally, the 25.6 scoring average in 2016 was the lowest for an ENMU defense in a decade.

35634During 2014 he was linebacker coach and special teams coordinator at SFU.

He helped the Red Flash post a 5-6 record in the Northeast Conference that included the program’s first-ever win over a Top 25 team. The defense ranked 27th nationally and with the punt return unit 20th in yards. Individually, Lewis coached four All-NEC players, including two first-team selections.

In his first stint in Portales, he served as linebacker coach and video coordinator. Lewis was part of the 2013 team that went 8-3 and won the Lone Star Conference title. It was the ‘Hounds first league championship in 22 years. The defense ranked number one against the rush in the LSC that season with the ‘Hound linebackers combining for 263 tackles (27.5 TFL’s), five forced fumbles and four interceptions. Lewis coached five All-LSC performers in his first go around at ENMU including four linebackers.

As a player from 2007-10, Lewis amassed the third most tackles (524) in FCS history. The linebacker started all 44 games in his career and was a three-time team captain. He also was a four-time All-NEC pick, the 2007 League’s Rookie of the Year and a two-time All-American.

Holding a B.A. in History from SFU and a Master’s in Physical Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration from ENMU, Lewis was a two-time Academic All-American during his playing days. He also was a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell semifinalist, also known as the “Academic Heisman”, and a three-time NEC All-Academic team member.
