Josh Burt is in his first year as Nebraska Kearney assistant women’s basketball coach.
The Salina, Kan., native came to UNK in the spring of 2023 from MIAA-member Newman University (Wichita, Kan.). Working alongside current Loper coaches Drew Johnson and Nicole Ohlde-Johnson, Burt helped rebuild the programs at both NU and Bethel College (North Newton, Kan.). Additionally, he was a coach and Assistant Director at the Ohlde Elite for five seasons, helping develop the next generation of college players.
At Newman, the Jets beat Central Oklahoma in the 2023 regular season finale to reach the MIAA Tournament for the first time in program history. NU also had a seven-win improvement from the year before, with Britney Ho earning third-team All-MIAA honors and reaching 1,000 career points. NU also led the league in three-point percentage and had seven MIAA Academic Honor Roll qualifiers.
The Bethel Threshers program was 4-23 prior the arrival of the Johnsons and Burt. They promptly tripled the win total in year one and then set a new program record for victories (20) in year two. The following winter, Bethel set several school records en route to hosting its first Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Tournament game in eight years. Finally, the Threshers won 16 games in 2020-21 and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time.
A graduate of Newman and Brown Mackie College, Burt was a head boys coach (2017-18) and assistant coach (2015-17) at Ell-Saline High School in Brookville, Kan.
