University of Nebraska - Kearney Athletics

Bill Murphy has served UNK Athletics since coming to Kearney in 1992 after graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

In 1993, the Hershey, Neb., native was hired full-time after his first year as a graduate assistant. He finished his Master of Science Degree in Exercise Science at UNK while serving as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Lopers.

He became the Head Athletic Trainer in 1995 and has held that position since. In 2017, he was promoted to Associate Athletic Director – Sports Medicine where he oversees the UNK Sports Medicine Staff, Strength & Conditioning Staff, Equipment Staff, and 15 NCAA sports at UNK. He also serves as a clinical preceptor for the UNK Master of Athletic Training Program.

Murphy received the 2013 George F. Sullivan Athletic Trainer of the Year Award and in 2024, he was inducted into the Nebraska State Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame.

He and his wife, Melissa, have one child, Kale, who is currently serving in the United States Army.
