Volleyball Tames Mountain Lions

Kearney, Neb. – Junior middle Jeri Walkowiak had a match-high 13 kills and hit .600 to pace the 9th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team over Colorado-Colorado Springs (-11, -11, -11) Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK (11-1) improves to 2-0 in RMAC play while the Mountain Lions fall to 6-4 (1-1 RMAC) on the young season.

Springs, with five Division I transfers on its roster, had no answer for the powerful Loper offense. UNK had 18 kills in the first set, 15 more in the second frame and 17 in the third and final set.

UNK committed just nine errors as a team, good for a season-best .436 attack percentage, Mean while, UCCS had just 19 kills, with 13 errors, in the match.

Walkowiak (Grand Island) also led the Lopers at the net with four blocks. On the outside, senior Erica Burson (Gross Catholic) had eight kills and hit .417 with Elkhorn junior Chelsie Carson at nine kills and a .316 hitting efficiency. Finally, junior libero Katlyn Heiserman (Manchester, Iowa) had a match-high 15 digs.

UNK is on the road the next two weeks, beginning with Colorado School of Mines next Friday. The Orediggers beat No. 14 Metro State, 3-2, last night in Golden.
