Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney track & field team returned to action this weekend at the annual Holiday Inn Invitational in Lincoln.
The
two-day, non-team scoring meet was hosted by the 'Huskers on Friday and Saturday. UNK had 23 top 10 finishes, including three provisional qualifiers.
Adding their names to the national list with this meet were senior throwers
Dane Tobey (Utica) and
Sam Murphy (Franklin) as well as redshirt freshman jumper
Marty Molina (Kearney).
Tobey had UNK's best finish of the meet – second – when he threw the shot 57-0.25. That effort currently ranks him third nationally; he is already on the NCAA list in the weight throw.
Tobey also was ninth in the weight throw (54-2.50), an event with two other Lopers in the top eight, led by Colorado Springs senior
Rich Mourer (3rd/58-4.75).
Next, Molina was fifth in the seeded long jump with a leap of 47-3.75; that is the ninth best in Division II so far this year.
Finally, Murphy collected two of the Loper women's nine top 10 efforts, being fourth in the seeded shot (45-10) and eighth in the seeded weight throw (8th/47-0.25). The throw in the shot ranks her sixth nationally.
Also on the women's side, Sidney junior
Jessie Golden qualified for the 60 hurdles finals (9.27) and went on to finish sixth (9.35). In distance events, Minatare sophomore
Amy Long was 5th at 5,000 meters (18:31.03) with Dickens sophomore
Brooke Harris sixth at 1,000 meters (5:07.93).
In running events for the men, Lincoln freshman
Cornell Leffler was 7th at 200 meters (22.51), Gothenburg sophomore
Alex Paul was 4th in the 400 (49.58) and Syracuse junior Thomas Neeman (3,000 meters/8:53.16) and Grand Island sophomore
Brandon Wissing (mile/4:26.17) each placed sixth in their respective events.
Finally, Elwood sophomore
Bryson Mahlberg tied for 8th in the unseeded high jump (5-10).
UNK hosts the annual Charlie Foster Open next Saturday.
