Kearney, Neb. - The 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team lost to 6th-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside,
26-9, and to 16th-ranked Gannon University of Pennsylvania,
18-16, Saturday at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The two-day, double elimination tournament is once again being hosted by Northern Iowa.
UNK (1-4) got a third dual after the tournament and beat unranked Mercyhurst of Pennsylvania,
27-10.
In a 1st round matchup with Gannon, the Knights got an upset went at 133 lbs. as Corey Bowers posted a 4-1 win over 4th-ranked
Joey Morrison (Lincoln East). All three of Bowers points came in the 3rd period.
UNK would take a slim 16-15 lead after a win by redshirt freshman
Christian Flavin (Sharpsburg, Ga.) at 197 lbs. However, 5th-ranked Frank McGrath posted a 4-2 win over junior
Ben Hohensee (Monet, Mo.) at 285 lbs. to give Gannon the dual victory.
Like Bowers, McGrath scored all of his points in the final frame, three coming on a near fall.
Later in the day in an elimination dual, UWP strung together four wins -- from 141 through 165 lbs. - to jet out to a 20-3 lead.
Top-ranked Marty Usman (Arlington, Texas) did beat 8th-ranked Luke Rynish, 5-2, at 174 lbs. but senior
Derek Ross (St. Francis, Kans.) was nipped by 4th-ranked Luke Haag, 5-4, at 184 lbs. to make it a 26-6 Parkside lead.
Against the Lakers, UNK lost to just top-ranked Andy Lamancusa (157 lbs.) and top-ranked Josh Shields (165 lbs.). Among the eight Loper wins was a fall from sophomore
Jordan White (Lincoln East) at 125 lbs. and a 10-4 win by Usman.
The Lopers have a busy week coming up, hosting Mesa State Wednesday, traveling to Central Oklahoma Thursday and then having three duals (Oklahoma, New Mexico Highlands, Newman) on Saturday in Texas.
