Track Starts Outdoor Season in Hastings

Dane Tobey automatically qualified for the NCAA's in May
Kearney, Neb. - Senior thrower Dane Tobey led the Nebraska-Kearney track & field team at the Bronco Relays Sunday in Hastings.

This was UNK's first outdoor meet of the 2010 season.

was pushed back a day due to weather. Other schools in attendance included Concordia, Midland Lutheran, Dana, Doane and the host Broncos.

Tobey automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in May with a throw of 58-4.75 in the shot put. Winning the event with ease, Tobey now ranks second nationally in the event.

Overall, the Lopers won 17 events with the women taking home 11 of those gold medals. Sophomore Tabitha Kreutzer not only won at 200 meters (26.83) but also ran the opening leg for the winning 4 x 100 (50.17) and 4 x 400 (4:03.40) relay teams.

Also on those teams, and winning individual events, were sophomore Erica Pirog (400 hurdles/1:06.28) and freshman Karley Piper (800/2:17.31).

Finally on the track, junior Jesse Golden won the 100 hurdles (15.61) and was runner up in the 200 (26.84), sophomore Brooke Harris placed first at 1,500 meters (4:51.04) and sophomore Sally Studley (100/13.31) and freshman Shelby Hamilton (400/59.70) won their events.

In field, junior Heather Wills won the triple jump (36-1.25) while senior Sam Murphy won the discus (140-2), was runner up in the hammer (167-0) and finished third in the shot (45-3.50).

Tobey, finishing second in the discus (166-10), was one of three Lopers in the top four in that event. Kearney native Marty Molina won the triple jump (48-1.25) while freshman Shad Cooney placed first in the high jump (6-5).

On the track, sophomore Alex Paul won at 400 meters (48.87), sophomore Nate Rogers was victorious in the 400 hurdles (54.63) and the 4 x 400 relay team won in a time of 3:22.81.

UNK heads to Fort Hays State this weekend.
