Track Adds Three More Names to NCAA List

Jena Issacson
Kearney, Neb. - Distance runner Thomas Neeman, thrower Jackie Ziemke and heptathlete Jena Issacson led the Nebraska-Kearney track & field teams this weekend as they added their names to the NCAA provisional list.

A few Lopers competed Thursday at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence; thrower Nick Theis (Grand Island) provisionally qualified in the hammer at that meet.

Starting Thursday and ending Friday, Issacson (Holdrege) won the heptathlon at the CSU-Pueblo meet in Colorado. Her point total (4,467) now ranks 22nd on the national list.

Most of the UNK team was in Crete for the Doane Relays Friday and Saturday. The highlights were Neeman (Syracuse) finishing runner up in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:23.58) with Ziemke (Waco) placing third in the seeded shot put (44-7).

Neeman's time is 10th best in UNK history and ranks him 17th nationally. Almost joining him on the list was Malcolm senior Quinn Willet, who finished third (9:25.29), just off the provisional time of 9:25.19.

Ziemke, coming in behind throwers from UNO and Concordia, is now 19th nationally in the shot.

Also in Crete, redshirt freshman Marty Molina improved his stock on the national triple jump list by leaping 49-7, good for a runner up finish and a ninth place national ranking.

That jump also ranks second in school history, trailing only a 50-5 mark set by John Laux in 2003.

Next, thrower Daney Tobey was second in the seeded shot (56.6-50) to Hastings' Scott Fritz (59-4) with Benkelman sophomore Kyle Glidden (50-2) fourth in this event.

Glidden also was third in the seeded discus (155-0) and ninth in the unseeded hammer (144-2).

Finally for the Loper men, Ogallala freshman Shad Cooney placed fifth in the high jump (season-best 6-5), Chadron sophomore Allen Osborn won the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.80 and Bayard sophomore Nick Kizzire was third at 5,000 meters (15.32.60).

Besides Ziemke, the UNK women throwers had a good day as Sargent senior Tracie Chanady was runner up in the seeded discus (133-11) and fifth in the seeded hammer (154-10), Wynot junior Brittany Weinandt won the unseeded discus (121-3) and placed fifth in the unseeded hammer (126-11) and Omaha freshman Emily Finley was third in the unseeded shot (38-9.75).

On the track, freshman Erica Pirog (1:04.22) and senior Cameron Smith (1:04.44) went 1-2 in the 400 hurdles, Sidney junior Jessie Golden was second in the 100 hurdles (14.76) and Omaha sophomore Mackenzie Schulz was third at 800 meters (2:25.67).

Finally, Holdrege sophomore Tabitha Kreutzer was sixth in the 100 (12.41) and seventh at 200 meters (26.09).

And in Pueblo, Isaacson was second after Thursday's action but edged out Fort Hays State's Carissa Heim (4,329) by winning the long jump and finishing in the top three in the 200 and 100 hurdles

UNK will send some athletes to the Drake Relays next week with most of the team taking part in the Hastings Last Chance meet on Saturday.
