Volleyball Uses Balanced Offensive Attack to Sweep Springs

Ariel Krolikowski
Kearney, Neb. - The 10th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team hit .423 and got solid serving from senior Setera Michaels to sweep Colorado-Colorado Springs (-19, -8, -15) Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK (11-3, 4-0 RMAC) rebounds from a five-set loss at No. 3 Wayne State Tuesday night while the Mountain Lions fall to 8-5 (2-2 RMAC) on the year.

A team with four Division I transfers, UCCS came out strong, recording seven early kills to have the first set tied at 12.

Then Michaels, a reserve setter and defensive specialist from North Platte, stepped to the serving line after a kill from sophomore Ariel Krolikowski (Grand Island) gave UNK a one point lead.

The crafty lefty served up seven straight points to not only give the Lopers a 20-12 lead but also change the momentum of the match. Springs never recovered from Michaels' serving streak as they tallied just 30 points the rest of the night.

In set number two, Michaels was at it again as she served eight straight points, taking a 5-3 lead and turning into a 13-3 cushion. Finally, she served up five more points in the third set.

UNK was firing on a cylinders offensively as well, having 48 kills and just seven errors in 97 attempts. Hitting over .400 for the second time this year, the Lopers had four players reach double digits in kills.

After a 27-dig, 24-kill effort at Wayne, Krolikowski remained hot as she had 11 kills and hit .579 while providing 14 digs on defense. Next, Grand Island senior Jeri Walkowiak had team-highs in kills (12) and blocks (seven) with fellow middle Ellie Pesavento (Omaha Marian) having 10 kills and hitting .474.

Finally, on the outside Grand Island senior Kelsey Werner had 11 kills and five blocks.

Springs was paced by Colorado transfer Nikki Kinzer (eight kills, .316 attack pct.) and Alex Nuttall (eight kills, seven digs).

UNK hosts Colorado School of Mines Saturday night.
