Week 7 Preview: Soccer Continues Road Trip

Sarah Talcott
Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team remains on the road this weekend and will face a hot Coloardo School of Mines squad Friday night and then play at Colorado Christian Sunday afternoon.

The Lopers (3-8-1, 1-6-1 RMAC), in 10th place in the league standings, are looking for its third-ever win away from Cope Stadium.

The game with Mines starts at 8:00 p.m. Central with the contest vs. the Cougars going off at 2:00 p.m. Central. Fans can watch the Mines game via America One with live stats available for both contests.

Mines (9-1-1, 5-1-1 RMAC) is now ranked 15th-nationally after blasting then 3rd-ranked Fort Lewis, 4-0, last weekend. The Orediggers followed that big win up with a 4-1 decision over Colorado Mesa, who is currently in third in the RMAC.

UNK has pestered Mines the last couple of years, taking the 'Diggers into OT last season in Golden and again this fall in Kearney. In 2010, CSM won 2-1 while the two teams fought to a 1-1 tie last month. In that game, Mines forced extra time with a goal in the 86th minute.

A very powerful offense features sophomore forward Anna Evans (19 points; nine goals) and two-time RMAC Academic Player of the Year Megan Woodworth (19 points).

In goal, UNK saw sophomore Amy Hegarty (3-1-1, 0.50 GAA) the first time around. On Friday night, senior Penny Rogers (6-0, 0.51 GAA) may get the start.

Christian (2-11, 1-8 RMAC) is behind UNK in the RMAC standings. However, the Cougs have been a thorn in the Lopers side, leading the all-time series 2-1-1.

Last month at Cope, UNK finally beat CCU as sophomore Sarah Talcott (Denver, Colo.) tallied a second half goal in a 1-0 win. The Lopers out shot Christian, 13-2, and will again look to apply as much pressure on a team that features two keepers, led by junior Catilyn Moses (1-6, 1.15 GAA).

The Cougars are riding a seven-game losing streak but both of its wins (Adams St. & Fort Hays St.) have come in Lakewood. Finally, true freshman Danielle Gershon has three of the team's nine goals in 2011.

UNK hosts RMAC powers Metro State and Regis next weekend.
