Kearney, Neb. - The 6th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball ran its win streak to 18 straight matches after a sweep of Adams State (
-13, -22, -16) in an RMAC Tournament semifinal match Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.
The Lopers (31-1) will play 11th-ranked Metro State Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in the tournament finals. The Roadrunners (24-5) advanced thanks to a four set victory over Western New Mexico (
-13, -23, 20-25, -23).
Not only will UNK be aiming to repeat as tourney champs but there also is a chance to host the NCAA Central Regional next week. Tonight in Duluth, Minn., ninth-ranked SW Minnesota State beat No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth, 3-2.
In the all important region rankings, UMD was first this week and UNK second. If the Lopers beat the 'Runners, it would be the only team in the Central Region with one loss. The NCAA pairings will be announced late Sunday night.
UNK hasn't hosted a regional since 2007. The Lopers have been very good at home in the NCAA's, posting an all-time record of 12-2.
Against the Grizzlies (19-9), the Lopers hit a solid .302 (43-11-106) while have a plus 10 advantage in digs, 59-49. A young Adams team put up a fight, however, as there were 16 ties and seven lead changes.
After controlling the first set, UNK trailed 12-10 after an ace by ASC setter Gabriella Rifilato. She served the next one into the net, starting a 4-0 Loper run.
UNK never trailed again, pushing its lead to 22-19 after a kill by junior setter
Jenna Rouzee (GI Northwest). Adams did make it 24-22 on a kill by Megan Tapia but a kill from junior outside
Ariel Krolikowski (Grand Island) gave the Lopers a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, Kearney used a 7-1 run to break an eight all tie. The key spurt featured three kills by Krolikowski and an ace from freshman libero
Liz McGowan (GI Central Catholic). Adams never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
Krolikowski paced the Lopers with 12 kills, eight digs and a .333 attack percentage. In the middle, sophomore
Haley Lake (Lincoln SE) had 10 kills with
Ellie Pesavento (Omaha Marian) at five kills, three blocks and a .385 hitting efficiency.
Finally, McGowan had a match-high 23 digs and Rouzee handed out 33 assists while also providing six digs, four kills and a block.
