Loper Wrestling Pick up Two Dual Wins

Kearney, Neb. – The ninth ranked University of Nebraska Kearney wrestling team pick up two dual win against nationally ranked Adams State, 25-15, and New Mexico Highlands, 50-0, on Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

Nebraska Kearney drops to 13-3 and 3-1 in the RMAC, while Adams State drops to 6-5 and 4-3 in the RMAC, and New Mexico Highlands falls to 0-8 and 0-7 in the RMAC.

Adams State
Nebraska Kearney got on the scoreboard first when the sixth ranked 125 pound sophomore Josh Smith (Houston, Texas) picked up an eight to two decision over Jerry Huff. Smith got a reversal late in the second period to led 2-0.

Smith got two takedowns and two point near fall in the third period to ensure his 19th win of the year.

Sophomore 133 pounder Stephen Weimer (Clovis, CA) would get 4-2 decision against Corey Johnson, to give the Lopers 6-0 lead.

Adams got one of their three wins at 141 pounds when sixth ranked Kenny Jordan got the riding time bonus point to defeat seventh ranked junior Dalton Jensen (Missouri Valley, Ia.), to win 3-2.

UNK and ASC would split the next two weight classes. UNK would win by forfeit at 149 pounds while ASC got a pin by Justin Samora against Islam Abitov (Osh, Kyrgyzstan / Kearney High) at 157 pounds.

Nebraska Kearney would secure the dual win by winning the next three of four weight class. Kearney got wins at 165, 174, 184, and 285 pounds.

New Mexico Highlands
The Lopers lead from start to finish in the dual against the Cowboys.

Kearney stated the dual off by getting forfeit victories at 125 and 133 pounds to lead 12-0.

UNK got back to back pins from Jensen and second ranked junior T.J. Hepburn (East Hampton, Conn.), to give UNK 18-0 advantage over HU. Jensen pinned Daniel Perales at the 5:42 minute mark, while Hepburn got his pin against Mariano Montoya at the 3:41 minute mark to extend UNK lead to 24-0. Sophomore Christian Flavin (Sharpsburg, GA) would get the last pin of the night against Justin Wilmas at the 6:11 minute mark of the match.

Nebraska Kearney got major decisions from sixth ranked 165 pound junior Joey Wilson (Half Moon Bay, Ca.) and from 285 pound senior Ben Hohensee (Monett, Mo) and got back to back decisions from junior 174 pound Caleb Kociemba (Hillsboro, OR) and 185 pound sophomore Ross Brunkhardt (Merino, Colo) to ensure Kearney would shutout Highlands.

Nebraska-Kearney concludes the dual home stand against Colorado State University-Pueblo tomorrow night at 5 p.m.
