Wrestling Blanks ThunderWolves, 38-0

Kearney, Neb. - The 9th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team needed about an hour and a half to blank Colorado-State-Pueblo, 38-0, Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK improves to 14-3 (4-1 RMAC) while the ThunderWolves fall to 3-9 (0-6 RMAC). A former RMAC power, Pueblo dropped wrestling a little over a decade ago but brought the sport back in 2008.

On Friday, the Lopers beat Adams State, 25-15, and New Mexico Highlands, 50-0.

The dual started at 157 lbs. and Kearney High grad Islam Abitov posted a 10-5 win thanks three takedowns in the first period. Junior Joey Wilson (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) the nation's sixth-ranked wrestler at 165 lbs., recorded four takedowns in a 9-5 win over Justin Grant.

Sophomore Drew Comito (Spokane, Wash.) made quick work of Trevor Grant at 174 lbs. as he recorded a tech fall, 17-0, at the end of the first period. His 18th win of the year, Comito recorded 12 near fall points in the easy victory.

The Lopers won the next two matches by decision before senior Ben Hohensee (Monett, Mo.) used a second period takedown to edge Patrick Carey, 3-2, at 285 lbs. Carey recorded an escape at the start of the third period and took several shots down the stretch but Hohensee fought off each one.

Finally, Texas sophomore Josh Smith, ranked sixth nationally at 125 lbs., pinned Lyle Evans at 2:07.

UNK heads over the Rocky Mountains early next week as it faces No. 13 Western State Wednesday and then Mesa State Wednesday in Grand Junction.
