Kearney, Neb. – University of Nebraska Kearney softball team hit 12 home runs to go 2-2 on the weekend against Colorado State University-Pueblo, in Pueblo, Colo.
UNK used an eight run fifth inning to defeat CSUP,
11-3, in game one on Saturday afternoon. UNK scored the first inning when senior DP
Jessie Thomas (Yutan) grounded out to the second basemen scoring freshman
Whitney Frederick from third.
CSUP would take the lead in their half of the third inning by scoring three runs to lead 3-1, which was their only lead of the game. UNK would regain the lead by scoring ten runs over the next two innings.
Pueblo would take the second game of the doubleheader to split day one on a walk off home run to win,
5-4.
The Thunderwolves scored first in game two Marissa Reyes scored when Aimee Spathias would hit into a double play. The Lopers got on the scoreboard when senior
Cassie Keck (Blair) hit her team leading seventh homer to right field, two batters later
Ali Seberger (Lexington) would also hit a homer giving the Lopers, 2-1 lead.
CSU-Pueblo added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, on a two run homer by Olivia Fimbres to left field to lead 3-2. UNK got one of the two runs back in top of the fifth inning Seberger would double down the left field line scoring Keck from second to tie the game at 3.
Pueblo regained the lead in the sixth inning when Samantha Rios singled to score Fimbres from second to go up 4-3. Kearney would tie the game again when Thomas hit a home run to left centerfield, to tie the game at 4, then Pueblo scored the game winning run on a homer by Carrie Henry.
The Lopers got nine run seventh inning to win game one of Sunday's doubleheader,
18-6.
Kearney would score three runs in their half of the first and second inning to jump out to 6-0 lead. Pueblo then would add one run in the bottom of third inning.
UNK would add three insurance run in the fifth inning off the bat of Seberger, who hit her fourth and fifth homers and junior
Dani Mowinkel (Hooper) also when yard in the fifth to score the third run of the inning.
Junior pitcher
Kirstie Hiatt picked up both wins of weekend, striking out four batters over 12.1 innings pitched.
The Thunderwolves won the final game of the series,
17-3, thanks to three home runs off of the bat of Henry. Henry would hit a two run homer in the first, solo shot and a grand slam in the nine run third inning.
Nebraska-Kearney will be at home for the first time against Fort Lewis next weekend.
