Kearney, Neb. - The 4th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team has six regular season matches left with Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State coming to town this weekend.
On Tuesday, UNK (24-2, 10-1) ran its win streak to six straight by sweeping Fort Hays State. The match with UCO starts at 6:00 p.m. Friday with the Gorillas visiting Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
Live stats are available for both matches with
KGFW doing an internet only broadcast on Saturday (pregame starts around 3:50 p.m.). Finally, live video streaming can be found at
America One.
In the first week of MIAA play, the Lopers swept both UCO (-14, -12, -11) and PSU (-26, -18, -9).
UCO (11-12, 6-6) has bounced back after missing, at times, both setters. Also, the Bronchos record could even be better if not for a 1-4 mark in five-set matches
Central Oklahoma fell to 17th-ranked Truman State, 3-1, last weekend to see a six-match win streak come to an end. Senior outside/right side Morgan Roy paces the Bronchos as she is averaging 3.73 kills and 3.01 digs per set.
She also has a team-best 31 aces and recorded 33 blocks at the net. In the loss to UNK, Roy had team-highs in kills (seven) and digs (seven).
Pitt (12-10, 3-7) has won three of four to be tied with Lindenwood for ninth place in the MIAA.
Five different players average between 2.00-2.46 kills per set, including senior outside Nicole Rockhold (2.22). She also supplies a team-best 3.20 digs per set and is tied for the team lead in aces (23).
Back on September 14th against the Lopers, Pitt fought off several set points but eventually dropped a long first set, 28-26. Six-foot senior middle Brooke Fay paced PSU with seven kills and two blocks.
The Bronchos and Gorillas will surely be wary of Loper junior middle
Katie Sokolowski, now second in the MIAA in htting percentage (.393) and eighth in kills (3.06).
Hitting over .500 the last week or so, Sokolowski has reached double digits in kills in three of the last four matches.
Defensively, UNK leads the MIAA in digs (20.51) by a wide margin. The Lopers average, thanks to senior
Kaleigh Anderson (4.69 dps) and sophomore
Liz McGowan (4.51 dps), ranks third in Division II behind Oakland City, Ind. (22.20) and Tusculum, Tenn. (21.29).
Kearney travels to Emporia State on Tuesday night (Oct. 30th) and then hosts NW Missouri State (Nov. 4th). The Lopers had to rally past the Hornets, 3-2, in September.
