Baseball Splits with Pueblo on Saturday

Adam Peters
| Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Junior right hander Adam Peters threw a six-hit complete game to power Nebraska-Kearney to a 6-3 win over Colorado State-Pueblo Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

The ThunderWolves (17-12, 14-5 RMAC) tallied seven unanswered runs to win the second game, 9-6. UNK is now 10-17 (9-10 RMAC) on the season.

Peters (Lincoln SE) earned his fourth win by fanning seven and walking just one. He allowed Pueblo to score single runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings with three of his K's coming against T-Wolf cleanup hitter Jovany Valenzuela.

UNK erased a 2-1 deficit by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Among the three hits in the inning was a two out, two-run homer to right by junior right fielder Brian Wuest (2 for 3, two runs, two RBI's).

Coming in for an injured Brandon Landanger (Kearney H.S.), junior left fielder Alex Miller (Grand Island) finished 2 for 2 with a run scored from the nine hole with junior DH Christian Lujan (Thornton, Colo.) going 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Kearney used the big inning to grab a 6-2 lead in the night cap. A six-run second featured seven of the Lopers' 11 hits in the game, including a two-run single by junior catcher Chandler Klute (3 for 4) and an RBI bunt single by redshirt freshman catcher Danny Droll (1 for 2).

However, Pueblo's Kyle Clemens (3-0) blanked UNK in the third and fourth innings and then junior southpaw Nick Flory came in and baffled the Lopers for a second straight day. After fanning all four batters he faced Friday, Flory earned his first save by tossing three innings of scoreless ball with three K's.

Thanks to an error, UNK did load the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh but Flory got back-to-back fly outs to end the game.

Pueblo moved ahead thanks to a four-run fifth that featured a key wind aided single to right and a two out, two-run single by lead off hitter Andrew Castaneda. The T-Wolves then added two insurance runs in the sixth as the Loper bullpen got a bit wild.

Valenzuela rebounded to go 3 for 5 with two runs scored while DH Brandon Evans went 2 for 2 with two runs and three RBI's. For Kearney, Wuest went 2 for 3 before leaving the game due to injury.

The series finale starts Sunday at noon.
