Baseball Falls to Rival Tigers

Junior Brian Wuest continues to swing a hot bat
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Senior second baseman Mace Krol hit a Grand Slam in the fourth inning to propel Fort Hays State to a 12-8 win over Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday night in Kansas.

The MIAA Tigers improve to 19-18) while the Lopers drop to 13-24. This game was added to the schedule about a month ago in order to makeup some contests both teams lost due to weather earlier in the year.

Playing Hays for the first time in three years, UNK got down 3-0 before tying things up with a three-run third. After the Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the inning, the Lopers grabbed its only lead of the night when junior Alex Miller (Millard West) hit a two out, two-run single in the fourth.

Hays responded quickly as the first three Tigers hit singles to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth. That brought up Krol (3 for 4), who hit the third pitch he saw over the right field fence for his ninth dinger of the spring.

Offensively for Kearney, junior right fielder Brian Wuest (Prosper, Texas) led off the fifth with his team-leading eighth homer of the year and finished 2 for 5 with two RBI's. Also, juniors Tommy Barnes (Perry Hall, Md.) and Chandler Klute (Kearney H.S.) had two hits apiece.

Seven different pitchers went to the mound for UNK with juniors John Bravard (Lyons, Colo.) and Kenny Namanny (Schleswig, Ia.) each tossing scoreless innings in relief.

Besides Krol, Hays saw shortstop Sheldon Howell go 3 for 4 with four RBI's from the second spot in the order and Brett Macari pick up his fourth save by fanning two over two full innings.

UNK hosts Colorado Christian in double headers Friday and Saturday.
