Baseball Rolls Past Cougars

Alex Miller
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Senior Mike Loseke and junior Adam Peters had strong efforts on the mound and several players had big days at the plate to help Nebraska-Kearney sweep a double header from Colorado Christian, 12-5 and 7-2, Friday afternoon at Memorial Field.

UNK (15-24, 14-16 RMAC) is now 6-0 against the Cougars (9-31, 6-24 RMAC) this year by a combined score of 77-26.

After throwing a complete game six-hitter last Friday, Loseke (Arvada, Colo.) blanked CCU for the first five innings tonight. Improving to 3-4, the lefty struck out six, walked two and allowed two earned on eight hits in 6.1 innings.

Freshman Chayse Gulzow (Grand Island) finished the Cougars off, fanning four and walking none over the final 2.2 innings.

UNK ran Christian starter Travis Mosler from the game after just two innings as the Lopers scored three in the first and four in the second. Kearney eventually built a 10-0 lead as they finished with 17 hits.

Juniors Alex Miller (Millard West) and Tommy Barnes (Perry Hall, Md.) each had four RBI's with Miller going 3 for 3 with three runs scored from the No. 2 hole. In the leadoff spot, redshirt freshman Reid Carter (Castle Rock, Colo.) was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.
Finally, junior catcher Chandler Klute (Kearney H.S.) went 3 for 3 with two RBI's.

Runs were tougher to come by in the night cap as Christian ace Marshall Crawford gave up just one run over the first four innings. The Cougars grabbed the lead as they used four hits, included a two-run double by Mosler, to score twice in the third.

UNK eventually got to Crawford (3-5), however, scoring four times in the fifth and adding two insurance runs in the sixth. Miller had a two out, two-run single to center to highlight the fifth while redshirt freshman shortstop Dillon Schroeder (Kearney Catholic) belted a run scoring triple to deep center in the sixth to cap a 3 for 3 night.

Peters (Lincoln SE) won his team-leading fifth game as he went the distance, allowing two earned on 10 hits and a walk. He also struck out five in throwing his third complete game of the spring.

The series will close out tomorrow with another double dip slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
