Baseball Drops Four in Final Trip to New Mexico

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Kearney, Neb. – The New Mexico Highlands Cowboys baseball team scored a total of 40 runs to sweep the series from Nebraska-Kearney this weekend in Las Vegas, N.M.

Highlands improves to 33-12 (26-10 RMAC) while the Loper s slip to 17-28 (16-20 RMAC). HU won by scores of 7-2, 18-12, 5-3 and 10-5.

In Sunday's game, the Cowboys scored four in the first and three more in the sixth. Out hitting UNK by three, 14-11, Highlands saw center fielder Luis Saez go 3 for 5 with two runs and three RBI's.

The Lopers left nine runners on base with four different players having two-hits. That included junior Tommy Barnes (Perry Hall, Md.), who went 2 for 3 with three RBI's.

Another four-run inning propelled Highlands to a win in the third game. With things tied at one, the 'Pokes scored four in hits half of the third to grab the lead for good and win by two.

Each team recorded nine hits with catcher Chris Pile going 2 for 3 with two RBI's to lead Highlands. His day included a two out, two-run single in the third.

Barnes (3 for 4) and redshirt freshman catcher Danny Droll (2 for 4) paced the Loper offense with redshirt freshman David Boddiger (Longmont, Colo.) throwing three innings of scoreless relief.

A four-run Highlands outburst also was a factor in Friday's contest. Ahead 3-2, the first two Cowboys were put out in the eighth but the next reached via walk. That base on balls started a big inning as three doubles and a single followed.

Senior lefty Mike Loseke (Arvada, Colo.) went the distance, allowing seven earned on 10 hits and three walks. He also struck out three and blanked HU in four straight innings.

The Lopers leadoff hitter, Reid Carter (Castle Rock, Colo.), and number eight hitter, senior Mike Nowak (Omaha Roncalli), each went 2 for 4.

Finally, Saturday's opening game featured 30 combined runs on 26 hits, 10 walks and six errors.  

Highlands erased a 12-8 Loper lead by scoring 10 in the bottom of the sixth. Nine of the runs came home after two were out as the Cowboys strung together five hits, including a three-run triple by right fielder AJ Alexander, and four walks.

Also, HU saw designated hitter Kyle Davis go 4 for 4 with four runs and five RBI's.

The Loper hitting stars were Barnes (3 for 5, two runs) and junior catcher Chandler Klute (2 for 5, two runs), who each knocked in five runs.

UNK closes out the regular season next Friday and Saturday at Regis. The games are moved up a day in preparation for the RMAC Tournament the following week
