Women's Tennis Blanked by National Power

Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team saw its 2012 season come to an end with a 5-0 loss to top-ranked BYU-Hawaii early Wednesday morning at the Sweet 16 in Louisville, Ky.

This year, the men's & women's tennis championships are part of the Division II Sports Festival. The tennis championships, played Wednesday-Saturday, are being played at the EP Tom Sawyer State Park.

A seven-time national champion, BYU improved to 27-0 by winning all three doubles matches and taking No. 2 and No.5 singles in straight sets. BYU-H's lineup included three of the nation's top eight singles player and two of Division II's top five doubles teams.

So far this spring, no team has scored more than two points against the Seasiders in duals, including Division I members Montana State and Illinois State.

The Lopers (18-8) best showing in doubles came in the second spot were sophomores Candace Green (Kearney H.S. ) and Britni Norfolk (Brashear, Mo.) lost by an 8-3 score. They battled the No. 5 ranked pair in the country in Yuan Jia and Marietta Tuionetoa.

In singles, Green tallied the most, falling 6-3 in her first set. Click HERE for full results.

UNK had just one senior in its regular lineup in Kearney Catholic grad Nickola Messbarger. She was a four-time All-RMAC pick in doubles and also played between No. 4-6 singles.
