Wrestling Dismantles Four Foes

Kearney, Neb. – The 13th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team dropped just eight matches in going 4-0 at the 1st Annual Midwest Duals Saturday at the Health & Sports Center.

Improving to 7-3, UNK racked up eight majors, seven falls and three tech falls in routing 17th-ranked Adams State (36-10), Colorado State-Pueblo (39-3), Northern State, S.D. (37-8) and Labette C.C., Kans. (28-13).
 
The Lopers started the day against the LCC Cardinals, the second-ranked team in the junior college rankings. While Labette won the first three matches, Kearney took the final seven.
 
Lincoln redshirt freshman Chase White started the comeback with a sudden victory decision, 3-1, over Jeremy Davenport at 157 lbs. Senior Chase Nelson (Wichita, Kans.) and junior Brock Smith (Gering) followed with falls and Seward junior Mark Fiala recorded a major decision at 184 lbs. to give UNK a commanding 22-13 lead.
 
UNK fell behind former RMAC rival Adams State, 10-3, but a Nelson fall at 1:12 put Kearney ahead for good at 18-10. Fiala, at 4:41, also recorded a fall.
 
The Lopers most dominant performance came against Pueblo. To win the final nine classes, the blue and gold recorded four majors, two falls and a tech fall. Nelson, a former Oklahoma Sooner, continued to impress with a 15 second pin of Trevor Grant.
 
Finally, redshirt freshman Ryan Bauer (Kearney H.S.) started an eight-match win streak in the NSU dual thanks to a 6-4 decision over Tyler Frost. This win streak featured back-to-back tech falls from senior Raufeon Stots (Houston, Texas) and White at 149 and 157 lbs.
 
On Thursday night at Millard South, UNK faces Maryville University (Mo.), the second-year program led by former UNO coach Mike Denney.
