Seven Wrestlers Place at Swede Open

Chase White
Kearney, Neb. – The 2nd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team placed seven in the top four at the 3rd Annual Bethany Swede Open Saturday in Lindsborg, Kans.

This was the Lopers first-ever trip to Bethany for a tournament. Due to the area schedule, this event drew more schools than normal.

Nationally-ranked Mark Fiala (Seward) and Chase White (Lincoln H.S.) each won their respective classes with junior Tyler Anderson (Clay Center, Kans.) and sophomore Andrew Riedy (Grand Island H.S.) finishing runner up.

Next, three Lopers came in third in junior Matt Lenagh (Millard North), sophomore Connor Bolling (Central City) and true freshman Ivan DeLeon (Katy, Texas).

Ranked fourth at 157 lbs., White went 5-0, recording three majors and a fall in the finals. His toughest battle was a 5-3 decision over Oklahoma's Shayne Tucker.

At 184 lbs., the eighth-ranked Fiala had a fall and three decisions to place first. He bested two individuals from Baker College as well as one from Oklahoma City U.

Lenagh came in third at this class, going 4-1 and only losing to Baker's Parker Owen 7-5. Fiala defeated Owen, 8-3, in the finals.

Placing for the second straight weekend, Riedy reeled off four straight wins to reach the 141 lbs. finals. That stretch included a fall, a tech fall and a 2-1 decision over UNL's Lukas Maki. In the finals, Riedy fell 4-3 to York's Jason Arreola.

One class higher, Anderson reached the finals thanks to a bye and three wins. He pinned Midland's Cooper Self in under a minute but lost to OCU's Trevor Anderson in the finals.

At 125 lbs., Bolling ended his tournament with five straight wins. After losing 3-2 in the second round, he received a second bye before starting his streak, which included two falls under 57 seconds.

DeLeon also bounced back from an early loss to finish third. At 285 lbs., he came up with six straight wins, three by fall and one by major decisions. In the finals, he got by John Close of Fort Hays, 3-2.

Among the other Lopers, Auburn junior Matt Oliver won four straight times at 165 lbs.
