Lopers Hand UCO First Loss of 2013

Setter Erin Seele
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Senior Katie Sokolowski and junior Liz McGowan combined for 25 kills to help the 5th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team sweep a talented Central Oklahoma squad (-23, -14, -23) Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK improves to 11-1 (3-0 MIAA) and is now 9-0 all-time vs. the Bronchos (10-1, 2-1).

Central Oklahoma lists just one senior on the roster but their youth didn't show up early on as they grabbed first set leads of 9-3 and 14-9. Kearney slowly worked its way back, finally tying things up at 19 on a kill by McGowan (G.I. Central Catholic).

After the Bronchos moved ahead 22-20, UNK knotted the set up on a kill by senior outside Ashley Leitner (Lincoln SW). However, UCO moved ahead on an unforced Loper error but the tables quickly turned as the Bronchos sent three straight into the nets for a 1-0 Kearney lead.

The errors didn't faze UCO as they jetted out to a 5-0 lead in the second set. UNK roared back, going on a 14-3 run that featured seven kills, three by both McGowan and Sokolowski.  In the set, UNK hit .314 with McGowan and Sokolowski each having five kills.

UCO came out slowly in the final set, trailing by scores of 12-6 and 20-14. However, the young Bronchos fought back, tying things up at 23 after a UNK attack error.

The Lopers closed out the night thanks to a kill by freshman middle Bailey Sokolowski (Kearney Catholic) and UCO's 23rd error of the match.

Individually, Sokolowski had 12 kills with McGowan having 11 and nine digs.  Next, Leitner had 16 digs and nine kills with sophomore libero MJ Massanet (Manhattan, Kans.) at a match-high 21 digs.

Finally, Colorado sophomore setter Erin Seele was at 32 assists, 11 digs, six kills and a match-high .462 attack percentage.

Sophomore Barbara Jackson paced UCO with 15 kills and 14 digs.

UNK hosts York College Tuesday night and then travels to D2 independent South Dakota Mines next weekend.
